We are always asking our supporters to share how they give back to their communities. Now, we’re turning the tables and asking our team members to share how they seek positive change! First up, Kari shares more on the volunteer work she does:
Finding ways to volunteer in the community is something that my family instilled in me when I was little. Now that I’m out on my own, it feels almost like a second "job", so to speak, as I'm involved with quite a few different groups outside of my work here at TOMS. I volunteer not because I feel better at the end of the day, but because of the simple connection I make with others to impact their life through conversation, effort, and time. I LOVE finding ways to invest in my community and those around me, whether it be leading a women's small group, working with the homeless, cleaning up parks, or hosting can drives. I find personal fulfillment in serving and helping people to not only make a difference in their lives, but to help change the world for the better.
Volunteering is also a way for me to get involved in my passions and interests outside of work. I'm passionate about planning events and helping to make a difference in worldwide needs, like hunger. This past fall I combined both passions by planning a month-long can drive in my community. Through this effort, we also help serve breakfast to homeless women in downtown Los Angeles, CA. At my community center, I plan pre-parties and invite musicians to play music before group meetings, which provides a place for people to come together and hang out as a community. I’m also really excited to invest in women through a weekly small group. These passions are too strong for me to just sit back and not take action on!
Organizations and businesses rely on volunteers to help them create change. You simply have to be willing to step up and say, "I want to help". Until there isn't a need anymore, I'm going to continue to volunteer when and where I can. I hope you are inspired to do so as well!
