With the launch of the TOMS Marketplace this week, we now like to take this opportunity to spotlight a few of our Marketplace Partners, their mission, and their products and how they are joining us to make the world a better place through social entrepreneurship.
The Honest Company was born out of necessity — or rather a load of laundry that inspired co-founder Jessica Alba’s Aha! moment. After washing her first daughter’s layette in THE “baby-safe” detergent, she broke out in a terrible rash and immediately knew it couldn’t be safe for her baby.
So, she set out on a mission to learn everything she could about toxic chemicals in everyday products. The shocking findings? Untested and unregulated chemicals are ubiquitous in the basics we all need and use — from baby shampoo to diapers to home furnishings and household cleaners. Thankfully, Jessica’s educational journey led her to the book Healthy Child Healthy World: Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer Home and its author Christopher Gavigan (he jokingly says she “stalked” him for solutions), then to Brian Lee and Sean Kane.
As parents, we shared the same frustrations that the average family couldn’t easily find or purchase safe products at a reasonable price. We were exhausted from investing endless hours researching product safety, jumping from site to site to buy natural products online, and running around to different specialty stores just to create a healthy home environment. Worse, we couldn’t (and wouldn’t) in good conscience pay a premium for something “safe” or “eco-friendly” once we found out it still had the questionable ingredients in it we wanted to avoid.
Seeing a void that needed to be filled, we co-founded The Honest Company because we wanted to redefine the family brand by making safe, non-toxic products that actually performed from one trusted and easy-to-find source. We believe parents shouldn’t be burdened by figuring out all of these issues alone. No parent (or person) needs to be a weekend toxicologist.
By creating products for families, especially children, we are dedicated to making natural formulations that are designed to minimize any harm that would otherwise come from using conventional, untested, and unregulated chemicals in the marketplace. We strive to do good for the community and lead by example, encouraging and challenging other businesses to rethink how they conceive of, make, and deliver products to customers. In doing so, we are putting our socially-driven business model to the test by investing more in raw materials that aren’t traditionally sourced (no harsh chemicals, ever!); having to come up with creative and workable solutions; and shifting the habits of industry, manufacturers, and consumers. Although this is more work now, we believe we are investing in a safer future and world — a philosophy we know TOMS embraces.
Through our “Honest to Goodness” initiative, we also donate time, money, and product to charitable organizations that address critical health and social issues affecting children and families — all made possible with the help of our customers and their purchases. Thanks to their shared passion, we have donated over $578,550 (financial assistance and product) and 500 employee volunteer hours to 10 different non-profits in 2013 and directly improved the lives of 32,281 families to date.
We are excited to partner with TOMS and other like-minded brands that share the dream of making social entrepreneurship the business standard, safeguarding the planet, and giving back to the community. The Marketplace Program is a wonderful opportunity to come together and collectively help people in need. Together we can make it better!
