At St. Ignatius School in Hunts Point, Sagone most enjoys the infectious and motivated attitude of his peers and teachers every day. “All of the teachers really care here,” the 14-year-old seventh grader says.
St. Ignatius is a scholarship-based private school for low-income students living in the South Bronx, NY. At school, Sagone and his peers work hard through a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for competitive high school admissions and beyond. However, learning can be tough when you can’t see the board or focus on your reading, something Sagone experienced after his old glasses broke during a game of dodge ball with friends.
“I was with my friends and we were playing dodge ball, but I forgot to take off my glasses,” Sagone shares. “Before I knew it, I got hit in the face and my glasses broke. I didn’t take it personally, but I was afraid my mom would be mad.”
With the support of TOMS Eyewear purchases, Sight Giving Partner Helen Keller International’s ChildSight® [SL1] program provides eye exams and prescription glasses to students like Sagone in low-income neighborhoods like Hunts Point. Sagone received a vision screening by HKI NY’s ChildSight® staff, and was prescribed new glasses. After receiving his new glasses, Sagone was looking forward to reading more, playing baseball with his friends and exploring New York City.
“When I got my new glasses, it’s like a camera,” Sagone said showing off his new frames. “…Like when you focus on things and it’s all clear.”
