There’s an eclectic blend of people roaming around our creative space in L.A., a city with an even greater blend of diverse people in pockets of town known for unique quirks. Here at TOMS, as high noon rolls in, there’s another blend that brings us together…and it’s greenChristine, who works with the Supply Chain team at TOMS HQ, will take it from here…
Hi, I’m Christine, and like tons of people in the desks and conference rooms, at the picnic and ping pong tables at the office, I work hard! So, when the energy’s low and we want a pick-me-up, together we blend…or, as I like to say, we make “green drink.”
Let me start by admitting that this idea started long before I joined TOMS, but once I got involved I sort of took it over and ran with it. (Note to those who know me: quiet down! I know you’re not surprised by this, but this is my blog post, and I’ve got a story to tell.)
See, we have this pretty amazing blender (so amazing that it’s almost strange to classify it as a blender at all) It crushes fruit, ice and veggies all together into a frothy green drink, the juice that’s at the heart of my favorite ‘club’ at TOMS. Green Drink Club started out with 4 people and currently boasts 10 members, and, believe or not, has an informal waiting list of people who want in once they get their first taste.
What is green drink, you ask, and why’s it so delicious? Green drink basically consists of a few veggies, some ice, some fruit, and water…blended in that magic machine. But it’s not as simple as it sounds! It has actually taken some refining and some mixture mishaps to learn what fruits and veggies go best together; as you can imagine, nobody likes a green frothy drink with a weird mix of flavors. Some learnings so far, and I know my fellow green drinkers will back me up here: whenever your use kale as your main green , a citrus fruit like oranges or tangerines must be mixed in…and no berries! Berries and kale = kind of gross. Some our personal favorite fruits to use are cantaloupe, peaches, and nectarines. Here’s what we’ve landed on as our favorite blend:
- 1 handful of fresh spinach
- 1⁄2 a cucumber sliced up (skin ok)
- 2 large pieces of pineapple
- 1 whole orange cut up into large pieces (no skin)
- 1/2cup of ice (more if you like it cold)
- Fill blender with water 3⁄4 of the way
- Close tightly (trust us on this point) and blend until all items are in juice form. others
*Makes about 4-5 servings (depending on cup size used)
*Pour & Share with friends!
The family that blends together gets healthy together. Since I introduced green drink into my diet, I am definitely making much better food choices and honest efforts to try and eat healthy the majority of the time. Go green!
Bonus blurb: We’ve also mastered the art (or is it a craft?) of making delicious watermelon juice, an invention I made completely by accident. One hot day, I thought I’d share the wealth of one juicy watermelon, so I threw it in my favorite m=piece of machinery (amazing blender – see above) with ice and water, and that was that! Last summer, word spread and the watermelon juice became quite the thing! About once a week, I’d blend it up, and watch the interest spike. Our humble group of 10 became 50+ coworkers awaiting the email notification that their refreshment was ready to be served! Even now people are asking when I will bring back the watermelon juice. My answer is always the same; “soon as watermelon is back in season.”
