Water for West Bengal, India

In West Bengal, India, 10th grader Naksima is doing her part in preserving her childhood and that of her classmates. She’s served as secretary of her school’s WATSAN committee (Water and Sanitation Committee) for years, and actively participates in their weekly hygiene sessions. “I have been in the WATSAN committee since its institutionalization,” Naksima says. “I was inspired by how having an arsenic filter plant installed at my school made a huge difference within the community and school.” Arsenic contamination is a common problem in West Bengal, leading to high rates of student illness. Restoring Sight to a Female Community Health Worker

In the Kapilvastu District of Nepal, Basmati Mishra works as a community health volunteer. In her job, she visits villages in the district daily, engaging her community through government health programs like immunizations, vitamin distributions, maternal health and other related programs. In addition to providing basic health services, Basmati had also been trained in basic eye health, becoming familiar with the symptoms of vision loss and cataract.
