This Is Port-au-Prince

We are so inspired by the culture and landscape of Haiti, and on our next venture there, we would love to make sure we stop by the best spots to see and learn as much as we can. We grabbed our local friend James Innocent and asked him to for his Port-au-Prince city guide. From where to listen to live music to the best places for walking around and exploring, James has you covered. How Prescription Glasses Are Made

At TOMS, we’ve always been so proud of how we help restore sight with our amazing Sight Giving Partners and our supporters’ TOMS Eyewear purchases. We’re especially proud of how we help restore sight in not just one way, but three different ways — surgeries, medical treatments and prescription glasses — that improve the lives of those who are visually impaired in 13 countries. Today, we’re excited to take you behind the scenes to explain how, exactly on of those three ways works: prescription glasses. Ever wonder how the glasses we give, and sometimes wear ourselves, work? There’s no doubt…

Success Breeds Success in Galufu, Malawi

In the small village of Galufu, Malawi, residents still recall the frequent outbreaks of cholera, especially during the rainy season, when they had to collect water from a polluted stream. One year they lost an entire family to the disease. This kind of illness is now only a memory. TOMS Giving Partner Water For People began working in Galufu nearly 15 years ago. Collaborating with Malawi Freshwater Project, a local NGO, Water For People worked with the small community of just 1,700 to develop four boreholes fitted with hand pumps to build household latrines. The availability of safe water and improved…

Meet Dr. Pierre-Yves DeCastro, an ophthalmologist working in Haiti’s capital city, Port-au-Prince. During the TOMS trip to Haiti, Dr. DeCastro screened every employee at the TOMS factory for visual impairment. This was the first time many of the employees had ever received a vision test, and nearly half of them needed glasses. Purchases of TOMS Eyewear allowed us…

Shira is the TOMS Director of Social Innovation and Impact, and manages our Sight Giving here at TOMS. Shira had the opportunity to travel with the TOMS team to Haiti to see our Sight Giving in action at the newly established TOMS factory. Here, she shares how good vision plays an impact on an entire country’s economy… In Haiti, there are only about 50 ophthalmologists, leaving much of the population without regular access to eye care. As our Sight Giving has grown, we’ve learned that vision plays a huge role in productivity. Without good vision, employees often struggle at work…

Haiti Behind the Scenes with James

How would you describe this trip to Haiti? It felt like an adventure. Though I was a local expert, I couldn’t help but feel grabbed by all the beautiful elements of Haiti. We explored metal-working villages, cabins surrounded by pine trees, a surf town on the beach, and the biggest fortress in the western hemisphere. Everyone down there was connected in this experience, not just because we all shared similar passions, but because we were all exploring these unique locations together. It was really powerful to share it with like-minded individuals and to show them these majestic aspects of a…
