Get To Know: charity: water
Meet the Founder
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO START CHARITY: WATER?
In 2004 desperate for change in my life, I left NYC and went to West Africa to volunteer with a humanitarian organization. Until then, I had made my living promoting nightclubs and fashion events. On the trip, I was astonished at the poverty that I saw. I began to document life and human suffering with photos. I put a face to the world’s 1.2 billion people living in poverty. I just couldn’t stand by and do nothing.
Water is essential to the health and survival of every person. Disease from unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. With a basic source of clean water nearby, children can stay in school rather than walk to water, food can be grown more readily, and local economies can improve faster.
HOW DOES CHARITY: WATER COVER OPERATING COSTS?
With 100% of public donations going directly to water projects, we depend on private individuals and partnerships like this one to cover everything else, from staff salaries to basic office systems to trips to the field to monitor our work. These investments fuel our long-term mission.
