Alex Torrey, Jonathan Torrey

What motivated you to launch your business?

Alex: It started with a kid’s drawing. It inspired us to showcase and support the creativity of children. Kids draw the “PocketArt,” and with every pocket you purchase, we will give a backpack full of school supplies to empower a kid.

Jonathan: What we also like about the kids’ drawings is that they have a raw confidence.

 

How does the giving work?

Alex: We currently work with local Giving Partners in the U.S., Mexico and Peru to identify the communities that are likely to benefit the most from our giving. We then work with our Giving Partners to identify our designated Partner Schools in those communities.

 

Why did you pick education as your cause?

Jonathan: We learned from our parents, both educators, the power of education. We grew up in a home where we saw firsthand how education could change lives. We had our mission long before we had a business plan.

 

As social entrepreneurs, how do you evaluate success?

Jonathan: We don’t measure performance or set goals based on units sold but rather backpacks given. Our team knows that, and it keeps all of us focused on our mission. Our goal for 2014 is to give 10,000 backpacks full of school supplies.
