Get To Know: The Base Project
- Job Creation
Meet the Founders
WHERE DID THIS IDEA COME FROM?
Chris: Over dinner one night, my twin brother and I were talking about our lives and we began wondering how we could combine the entrepreneurial aspects of our jobs with the social values we really appreciated in our volunteer work. We wanted to create a convergence of the two. We came up with a triple-bottom-line business model first, then we identified the industry and our first products.
HOW ARE THE BRACELETS MADE?
Doug: In Namibia, we’re working with more than 20 artisans, mostly women, in two cooperatives in the Northern Kunene region. The artists apply traditional craftsmanship to an unconventional and modern material: PVC pipe. We’re upcycling, using discarded water pipes that may have been part of an irrigation system, for example. The earth tones come from a combination of sun and dirt exposure.
WHAT KIND OF IMPACT DOES THIS MAKE?
Chris: With our fair trade pricing and large-scale orders, our artisans have been able to triple their monthly income. We’re also reinvesting a portion of the proceeds from every item back into our artists’ communities – into local gardens, craft centers and scholarships.
