Get To Know: SAME SKY

Meet the Founder
YOU PREVIOUSLY WORKED AS A PRODUCER FOR TV, FILM AND THEATER. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP?
Producing laid the groundwork for my focus on important social issues. After developing a film on the Rwandan genocide, I knew that I wanted to work on the ground with women genocide survivors. Producing had taught me how to tell the artisans' stories and shed light on their creative artisanal skills.
DESCRIBE HOW SAME SKY WORKS.
At SAME SKY, we operate on a trade-not-aid model. We’ve developed a way for the women to lift themselves out of poverty by offering a hand-up, not a handout. All the women creating jewelry with us earn 15 to 20 times the average sub-Saharan wage. For example, the income she earns from making a pair of cufflinks could pay for a month of clean water. Or the wages from a necklace could fund one year of education for her child.
HOW DO YOU FUND GROWTH?
We reinvest 100% of our net proceeds into our program to train and employ more women in need. We've recently expanded into the U.S., employing women who have been released from correctional facilities. These jobs help restore their confidence and dignity, while also creating second chances.
