Get To Know: Out of Print
Meet the Founders
WHERE DID THE IDEA COME FROM?
Jeff: We’re both avid readers and a lot of our conversations revolve around books and authors.
Todd: And we’ve had a lot of conversations. We’ve been friends since the second grade.
Jeff: We want more people to talk about books, and t-shirts are great conversation starters.
HOW DOES GIVING FIT INTO YOUR BUSINESS MODEL?
Todd: In many parts of the world people don’t have access to books at all. We’re working to change that. So we’ve partnered with Books for Africa, which supplies high-quality books to rural school libraries, orphanages, adult literacy programs and community centers where resources are scarce. Since we started, our customers have helped us donate more than 600,000 books.
DID EITHER OF YOU HAVE A BACKGROUND AS A SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR?
Jeff: I worked at a hedge fund and then I taught accounting. I was also a marathon coach for the Alzheimer’s Association.
Todd: I worked in marketing at Nike. But we both always talked about starting our own business.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ASPIRING SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS?
Jeff: There’s no use sitting on a good idea. Take the leap of faith, and follow your intuition.
