Get To Know: HALF UNITED
Meet the Founders
WHERE DID THE IDEA COME FROM?
Carmin: My background was in TV journalism, but in 2009 I left my job to travel with TOMS as part of its Vagabond Tour. While on the road, I was inspired by the idea of combining fashion and philanthropy as a way of doing business. I felt I’d found my perfect fit. I could run a business that helped people in need, while sharing their stories at the same time. I approached my brother about the idea, and he was immediately on board. We started the business with $200 and a lot of ingenuity.
HOW DO YOU PROVIDE MEALS?
Christian: We form partnerships with organizations that educate and empower children in addition to providing them with food. Our feeding projects include supporting school lunch programs, planting school gardens and funding book bag buddy programs, which provide children with weekend meals while in school. To date, we’ve provided over 80,000 meals to children in need on four different continents.
SOME ITEMS FEATURE EMPTY BULLET CASINGS. WHY?
Christian: We know bullets carry a negative connotation, but we decided to take something negative and turn it into a positive – to fight hunger. Repurposed, the bullet doesn’t destroy lives; it supports lives.
