TOMS helps Haiti

1/27/2010

In a recent interview with Ray Suarez, Partner's in Health founder and UN Deputy Special Envoy for Haiti Dr. Paul Farmer mentions that coordination of new volunteers and delivery of services have been their greatest challenges following the 7.0 earthquake earlier this month. The need to plan is essential, as this is not something that will "be over in 2 to 3 weeks or months, re building this will take many many years." Farmer notes that the short-term acute needs are the "easier" things to accomplish, however moving forward the Haitian people will need rehab medicine, "a lot better post-opp nursing" and re-building of their entire health care infrastructure. A 10 year rebuilding program presents a difficult path ahead, but will also create many jobs for the people of Haiti.

When Suarez asked if this disaster brings opportunity for Haiti to start from scratch, Farmer offered a quote from Former President Bill Clinton, that they will in fact be "Building back better" and Haiti can now "seize this moment to start afresh."

TOMS customers have made it possible for TOMS to make a donation to Partners In Health in support of immediate response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti. In addition to this support, we are committed to having a positive impact on the people of Haiti by doing what we do best - by February, TOMS will have given 30,000 pairs of shoes to children in Haiti and more are on the way!

TOMS has given shoes to Haiti through Partners In Health since 2009, and in light of the recent 7.0 earthquake that has devastated thousands of lives, TOMS is taking action. The first 48 hours is critical for decisive action in any disaster relief effort; therefore TOMS will be donating $5 for every purchase of a One for One item from the TOMS website from 10am PST on Wednesday January 13th until 10am PST Friday January 15th.

“With our hospitals and our highly trained medical staff in place in Haiti, Partners In Health is already mobilizing resources and preparing plans to bring medical assistance and supplies to areas that have been hardest hit. In Boston, our procurement and development teams are already fielding numerous offers of support and making arrangements to deliver resources as quickly as possible to the places where they are needed most.”www.PIH.org

In addition to monetary donations for immediate disaster relief, we have over 30,000 shoes scheduled to be given in Haiti in February to help with rebuilding efforts.

You can donate directly to Partners In Health here.

About Partners In Health:
The work of PIH has three goals: to care for our patients, to alleviate the root causes of disease in their communities, and to share lessons learned around the world. Through long-term partnerships with our sister organizations, we bring the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need and work to alleviate the crushing economic and social burdens of poverty that exacerbate disease. PIH believes that health is a fundamental right, not a privilege.
